ARF's adoption program is designed to create forever families. Adopting a companion animal is a lifetime commitment and ARF’s adoption specialists work with potential adopters to ensure the best possible match, and to provide information and resources needed to begin life with a new friend. ARF doesn’t place animals on hold, but completes adoptions with the first qualified household.
In order to ensure a successful match, the adoption process may take an hour or more to complete. Potential adopters should arrive early and allocate the appropriate amount of time for a successful adoption.
To complete an adoption, the animal’s primary caregiver must be present. Bringing a new companion animal into the family is a decision which requires careful consideration. ARF asks adopters to make a commitment for the life of the animal so it’s important all family members and resident canines (if adopting another canine) are compatible with one another.
ARF adoption specialists can facilitate a meet and greet with the resident dog at ARF’s facility during adoption hours. ARF encourages children 16 years or younger and resident dogs to be present throughout the adoption process.
Please download a dog adoption survey or cat adoption survey, and bring the completed document on adoption day.
Early-bird advance sign-ups are available Wednesday through Friday. Beginning at 9 a.m. potential adopters may sign-up in advance to meet with an adoption counselor once adoptions officially start. When adoptions begin, early-birds must be present to start the adoption process. If not present, the potential adopter’s name will be dropped to the bottom of the sign-up list.
ARF is open for adoptions Wednesday through Sunday in its Walnut Creek headquarters. Children are welcome to enjoy ARF’s special programs in its education center during adoption hours. ARF also conducts mobile outreach adoption events in the community throughout each month.
To research in advance which ARF dog or cat will be available for adoption, please visit Adoptable Pets. These pages are updated frequently with new available candidates.
Potential adopters residing outside the San Francisco Bay Area should contact their local rescue organization or animal shelter listed in the government pages of the phone book for assistance. ARF will place an animal with a family living outside the San Francisco Bay Area; however the adopter must still meet the animal and complete the adoption process in person at ARF's shelter. ARF does not adopt animals without a personal interview and ARF does not ship animals.
