See You this Sunday, May 2 at Animals on Broadway!

This Sunday is fun-day with Animals on Broadway, so finish your chores on Saturday! Bring the entire family to Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek for a full day of activities, including animal adoptions, kids’ activities, more than 85 vendor booths, a dog wash, music, K-9 demonstrations, a text message contest and raffle drawings! It’s the perfect time to make a new addition to your family: ARF and other animal welfare groups and breed rescues from around the Bay Area will be out with their aspiring adoptees.

Be sure to stop by the Pet Wellness Fair and take advantage of the wide range of services and information especially for Fido, such as vaccinations, blood tests, and more!

The free festival runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., following Paws on Parade, a one-mile walk starting at 10:30 a.m. Join the parade as we walk around Broadway Plaza to raise money for ARF, to help rescue dogs and cats and bring the healing touch of animals to people of all ages.

ARF Joins Forces for East Bay Pit Fix

The faces behind the kennel doors were nervous, but friendly. Twenty Pit Bull and Pit Bull mix dogs – including a litter of eight 11-week-old puppies – sat and waited. Luckily for them, the worst they faced was a quick spay or neuter surgery, with a speedy return to their loving families. But with great numbers of this popular breed crowding public county shelters – and without the intervention of rescue organizations like ARF – Pit Bulls often find their wait ends in something far more tragic.

While most dogs passing through public shelters are readily adopted, the sheer numbers of Pit Bulls affect their survival chances; there are just too many to find homes for them all. In fact, euthanasia of animals is on the decline across the East Bay – except for Pit Bulls. This makes spay/neuter especially important for the breed, to prevent unwanted puppies and reduce roaming or stray dogs who may enter the shelter system.

On April 14, ARF participated in the annual Bay Area Pit Fix Week, teaming up with East Bay SPCA, Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society, Contra Costa Animal Services, and nine other shelters to create the event’s largest group yet, all working together to address Pit Bull and Pit Bull-mix overpopulation. More than 168 dogs were altered during the week.

Collaborating with other agencies is one of many ways ARF is working to make a difference for animals in the community. Please join our rescue efforts by fostering an animal or making a donation… and be sure to have a peek at ARF’s own adorable, adoptable Pit Bull mixes Watch on YouTube! Shelby and Watch on YouTube! Memories Bloom through Garden Tiles

ARF’s community garden is a beautiful place in any season, but when garden tiles blossom along the Honor Wall, the landscape is transformed with special memories. Remember the two- and four-legged friends that have touched your life with your own commemorative tile.

Customize each 6" x 6" tile with a full color photo, logo, or work of art, with a name and the phrase of your choice. Available for a $250 donation, tiles will be permanently displayed in ARF’s garden oasis. Order today and receive a complimentary replica tile for personal use.

Adoption Stars Gets Personal

Shelby and Constance get a little personal in the hunt for their perfect adopters! In April, ARF found loving new homes for 131 cats and dogs, and rescued 118 more. Now, help us find these lovely ladies a home that’s right for them:

Shelby
Active, dedicated lady seeks long-term relationship with robust individual or family. Favorite song: “All Day & All of the Night” by the Kinks. (The only time I feel alright is by your side...) Check out my video; if you’re ready for a constant companion in everything life tosses your way, we can get together this weekend!

Constance
Looking for an experienced partner who isn’t threatened by an independent gal like me. I like playtime, but a girl needs her space! If you’re looking for a steady companion who knows what she wants and when she wants it, leave me a message. I’ll let you know if I’m interested!

New Beginnings

Kane

Septimus Heap
Adopted in February, Septimus Heap is doing great in his new home. “I’m amazed at how intelligent he is,” his adopter Jason says. He and Septimus Heap (now named Kane) are working together on commands, and the pit bull terrier mix is picking things up very fast. He’s also learned where his sleeping area is, and he heads for it whenever he gets tired. “Thank you so much for giving me a healthy and happy friend,” Jason says. “I’ve told everyone how great my experience with ARF has been, and I look forward to adding another ARF pet to my family!”

A Message from Tule
Hello my ARF friends! Sorry for the delay in writing. I’ve been busy getting used to my new home with Karin and Larry. You may remember, I am a very shy girl. I spend most of my time on the bed hiding in the pillows. My next favorite spot is on the couch. I changed my name to Juliette, to match my petite, delicate beauty and to honor the late Romeo, who lived here before me. Then there’s Emiliana. She and I are still trying to become friends. She’s a silver tip two-year-old female with LOTS of energy. Last night I tolerated her lying next to me on the couch - she was flopping her tail on me! But she purrs really loud. I love salmon, and occasionally get a few scraps from dinner. I am healthy and well. Thank you all for taking good care of me until I found my new home.

Juliette
