Making a Difference

Paws Press is getting a makeover! Over the next few months, ARF will be grooming our monthly e-newsletter into a sleek new style. Don’t get your fur up: you’ll still get the inside scoop on news and events, the same great animal stories. We’ll keep you updated on the many ways you can make an impact on the lives of companion animals. The new look is part of our ongoing commitment to bring you news you can use.

We might spring for a pedicure, too, with Paws on Parade just around the corner at Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek on May 2! Hopefully you’ve got your team assembled and your fundraising well under way. If not, it’s easy to set up a fundraising webpage; or, go low-tech and print a pledge form – either way, be sure to let friends and family know that the money you are raising will save the lives of cats and dogs who would otherwise be euthanized in public shelters. Rain or shine, this year’s going to be another fabulous event. Don’t miss this chance for a little together time with Fido while you raise money to help rescue animals and bring people their comforting, healing touch!

Paws on ParadeBe sure to stay after the parade for Animals on Broadway, a free community festival. It’s our 10-year anniversary, and there’s a lot to check out this year! You’ll especially want to stop by the brand new Pet Wellness Fair. Treat Fifi at the dog wash; then pamper her with nail trimming, doggie massage, and more. There’s fun for people as well, with great shopping, live music, kids’ activities, and exciting raffle prizes.

We hope you will join us — there are many ways you can make a difference for the animals: consider making a donation, adopting a pet, or volunteering your time.

Kind Kids

ARF’s popular after-school program, Kind Kids Club, is now being offered at local elementary schools! Each week focuses on a different pet-related topic; children learn about pet care, animal behavior, and the value and responsibility of being a pet guardian.

Students at Valle Verde Elementary in Walnut Creek are already enjoying fun, weekly lessons on animal companionship. Does your child attend school in Contra Costa County? Contact Erika at 925.296.3106 or ehart@arf.net to find out how Kind Kids can become an after-school enrichment program at your child’s school.

Kind Kids Club is still offered at ARF on Fridays, 4-4:50 p.m. The next five-week session begins March 19. Register online today!

CAMP ARF IS ENROLLING NOW! Don’t wait to register for ARF’s popular day camp, awarded “Best Summer Camp” by Diablo Magazine’s Best of the East Bay 2009.

Business of Saving Lives

Be sure to register for ARF’s sixth annual Business of Saving Lives conference, on March 20 and 21, 2010. Open to the public as well as animal welfare professionals, the weekend conference offers an exciting agenda of workshops on animal behavior, shelter business and program practices. Meet dog behaviorist and award-winning author Jean Donaldson, founder of The Academy for Dog Trainers at the San Francisco SPCA; veterinarian Dr. Stacy Fuchino from Animal Planet’s Housecat Housecall; and ASPCA® Senior Director of Community Programs, Sheryl L. Pipe.

Conference fee is $60 for both days, and includes materials, continental breakfast and box lunch. It’s time to find out what Rover’s really been trying to tell you!

New Beginnings

Cody and Ashley

Cody
Since adopting Cody in December, the Avery family has discovered that training a dog and a very active four-year-old at the same time is their biggest challenge. “Cody thinks Ashley is a puppy playmate, so he has a hard time listing to commands in her presence. They make each other hyper!” Still, mom says her favorite thing about Cody is watching him earn treats when he learns a new trick, like how to “sit.” Brother Bryan enjoys just sitting with Cody. Ashley’s favorite thing is that Cody likes playing!

Baby & Honey
Two sweet siblings made homeless by a housing foreclosure, Baby and Honey have settled in fine with their new guardian, Linda B. “They are enjoying the sight of lots of birds and people through the windows,” she writes. She was quite touched when shy Honey – as cautious as ever! – jumped onto her lap, rolled over and stretched out, as if to say, “Thanks for bringing me back to your house!”
