Tony La Russa, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, accepted a $25,000
donation from Safeway Inc. and Milk-Bone on behalf of his Animal Rescue
Foundation during a ceremony earlier this week at the grocery giant's
Pleasanton headquarters.
An East Bay resident and former manager of the Oakland A's, La Russa
is a passionate animal rights advocate who founded Walnut Creek-based
ARF to rescue, rehabilitate and place homeless animals.
He decided to establish the organization after rescuing a homeless cat
who wandered onto the field during a World Series game in Oakland, while
he was still skipper of the A's.
Steven A, Burd, Safeway's chairman, president and CEO, was on hand for
the event. La Russa signed autographs for Safeway employees and ARF brought
along its mobil adoption van.
